Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the library?
The library is located on the second floor of the main campus, at 310 St. Charles Street in Room 202.
What are the hours of operation?
The library is open Monday through Friday, 7AM to 4PM.
Who may use the library?
Any member of the public may ask for and receive assistance from the library staff.
Who may borrow library materials?
Currently enrolled students with FTCC ID Cards, faculty, and staff may borrow library materials.
How long can I check out books?
Currently enrolled students with FTCC ID Cards may check out books for three weeks, with two renewal options.
How do I find the materials I need?
The FTCC library has a computerized card catalog, which can be accessed through FTCC's web page. Brochures with detailed instructions are available in the library to help you locate what you need. Tutorials on using the card catalog are also available if you need assistance.
Are computers available in the library?
There are 18 computers networked through a wireless hub, which are available for use in the library.
Do I need a password to access the computers in the library?
Yes. The password for the FTCC computers is login.
Can the general public print articles found in the online databases in the library or on the Internet?
Only currently enrolled students with valid FTCC ID's can print articles found in the online databases. The public may access and print articles from the Internet. At this time, the FTCC Library does not charge for printing. However, we do request that printing be limited to 30 pages.

The library staff requests you to conserve paper. A few simple practices are suggested:
  • Differentiate between what you really need to print and what you just want to look at.
  • Print to both sides of the paper. Go to file-print-finishing effects-print to both sides.
  • Send one print job at a time to the printer, and collect your print job before sending a new one.
  • When printing from PowerPoint, first save the file. Open the saved file and look for the command that says "Print What." Change the setting to Handouts; you can indicate how many slides per page. It will also save time if you select Grayscale, rather than color.
  • Always select the most printer friendly version of any file or web page.
  • If you are printing drafts of assignments, or materials that will not be submitted to instructors, we recommend you utilize paper from the recycle bin. (Check with instructors to see whether they will accept assignments on recycled paper!) When loading the printer, make sure the "printed" side is up.
Is the online catalog accessible off campus?
Yes. Anyone with a computer with Internet access may search for books in the online catalog from their home, or other locations.
Are the electronic databases accessible off campus?
Currently enrolled students can access the indexes and databases off campus if their computers have Internet connections. This is also true for faculty and staff. If you will be accessing World Book Online from a remote location, please check with the librarian for the password.
Do I need a login name and password to access Blackboard?
Initially, the login name and password to access Blackboard is the same. Currently at FTCC, the way to enter the login name and password is to type le, the first initial of your first name, your last name, and then the last two digits of your social security number.

Here is an example: lejsmith00. The login name and password will be the same.
Can cell phones be used in the library?
No. Cell phones should not be used in the library. Please turn your cell phones off before entering the library.
Can I use my laptop computer in the library?
You may use your laptop for accessing personal documents, which may be in software applications such as Word, or PowerPoint, but you will not be able to access the Internet from your laptop.
Does the library have any popular fiction?
The library sponsors "Take It, or Leave It", popular fiction that has been donated by students, staff and faculty. You may check these items out, and/or donate items to add to this collection.
Does the library have a copy machine?
Yes. FTCC and the Student Government Association (SGA) placed a copy machine in the library. Copies cost $.10.
Can I find my textbooks in the library?
As a rule, the library does not purchase textbooks because its purpose is to supplement classroom materials. Occasionally, the library may have a textbook used in a course, but such instances are rare.
What other services are available to me at the library?
The library has recently acquired a TV monitor with a VHS and DVD player for students to access materials within the library collection. The library has audio-visual materials on pipe drafting, diesel technology, Math and English tutorials, and other topics related to the school curriculum.
What other libraries are available to me?
You can search the resources of the publicly funded academic libraries in the state using the LOUISiana Libraries Union Catalog. See the LOUIS link on the library web page. You may be eligible to check out materials from some of these libraries if you have a LALINC card and the library you wish to use allows you to check out materials. See library staff to obtain a LALINC card.
