The mission of the biology, Human Anatomy & Physiology courses at LE Fletcher Technical and Community College (FTCC) is to provide a sound and thorough academic foundation of human biology for those students seeking to pursue nursing and allied health careers.

The two semester coursework meets the requirements for entry into Bachelor Degree of Nursing, Associate Degree of Nursing, Licensed Practical Nursing, and Allied Health Programs such as Radiology, Cytotechnology, and Dietetics.

The Human Anatomy & Physiology labs recently received a $40,000 grant for the specific purpose of providing the necessary learning tools for students to succeed in these challenging biology courses.

The picture shows a typical lab session where independent study skills are reinforced and refined as well as for anatomy and physiology teachings. The lab utilizes high definition monitors and models of the human body systems and organs. Students work independently and in small groups. Although not in view (since he took this picture), the instructor is only a few feet away and performs frequent demonstrations to accelerate learning and improve student test performance.

Steven Lee is a full-time biology instructor at FTCC and an active forensic medical analyst for the legal profession (researched over 175 cases). He received his Master of Science Degree from the School of Graduate Studies and Graduate Pathology Program, Department of Pathology at LSU Medical Center, New Orleans.

His graduate research was published as a thesis titled "Variability of the expression of voltage-gated sodium channels in dorsal root ganglia of rats, following experimentally induced inflammation."

His research activities included:

  • Animal behavior studies (chemical and mechanical hyperalgesia)
  • Histopathology of inflamed tissues (light microscopy)
  • Immunocytochemistry (confocal microscopy)
