Developmental English
DVEN 0900 - ENGLISH
LITERACY (6/0/6) (Lowest Remedial English) This course is designed to provide instruction and review in
the fundamentals of English, which includes the concepts of parts of speech, sentence types, nouns,
subject/verb agreement, verb tense, pronouns, adjectives and adverbs, capitalization and punctuation.
DVEN 0910 - BASIC
COMPOSITION (6/0/6) (Midlevel Remedial English) This course provides an in-depth study of sentence
structure with a basic review of grammar and usage and the fundamentals of paragraph and essay writing.
DVEN 0920 - INTERMEDIATE
COMPOSITION (3/0/3) (Final Remedial English) This course provides a study of paragraph development and
introductory essay writing with an intense review of grammar and usage.
Freshman English
ENGL 1010 - ENGLISH
COMPOSITION I (3/0/3) (equivalent to English 101 at NSU)
Prerequisite: Completion of all required deveopmental reading; completion of or
registration in required developmental math classes below DVMA 0930 AND satisfactory
placement score or successful completion of DVEN 0920. An introduction to writing in forms
and expressive and informative discourse with emphasis on writing as a learning, thinking
process. Includes discussion of and practice in strategies used in prewriting, writing,
and revising. ACT SCORE OF 28 OR ABOVE PLACES THE STUDENT OUT OF ENGL 1010. This course
was previously numbered ENGL 1015.
ENGL 1020 - ENGLISH
COMPOSITION II (3/0/3) (equivalent to English 102 at NSU)
Prerequisite: ENGL 1010 with a minimum grade of "C." Continues strategies learned in ENGL
1010. Introduces writing persuasive, evaluative, and other forms of argumentative
discourse. This course was previously numbered ENGL 1025.
ENGL 1160 - TECHNICAL WRITING (3/0/3)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of all required developmental English courses. A study
of basic English grammar skills, correct word usage principles, proper punctuation,
capitalization, and effective comunication techniques. General procedures in organization
of ideas and writing professional reports and/oor proposals for industry.
Sophomore English
ENGL 2110 - SHORT STORIES AND NOVELS (3/0/3) (equivalent to English 255 at NSU)
Prerequisite: "C" or better in ENGL 1020. General introduction to the study and
appreciation of the short story and novel.
ENGL 2150 - POETRY AND DRAMA (3/0/3) (equivalent to English 256 at NSU)
Prerequisite: C or better in ENGL 1020. General introduction to the study and appreciation of poetry and
drama.
