The purpose of the phlebotomy course is to provide specialized classroom instruction &
practical laboratory experience to prepare students for employment in the health care field. The program prepares
students for employment in hospitals, long-term care facilities, & home health agencies where venipuncture is needed.
Classroom instruction includes basic venipuncture skills, basic anatomy & physiology, & infection control. Students
also participate in clinical activities in a hospital under the direct supervision of an instructor. The program is

Phlebotomy's Program Objectives
The Phlebotomy program at Fletcher Technical Community College prepares individuals for:
- Displaying knowledge of infection control and safety
- Exhibiting an understanding of quality assurance and the importance of specimen collection in the overall patient care
system
- Utilizing knowledge of collection equipment, various types of additives used, special precautions necessary,
and substances that can interfere in clinical analysis of blood constituents
- Performing proper techniques to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on adults, children and infants
- Displaying a knowledge of specimen transport and processing
