The purpose of the phlebotomy course is to provide specialized classroom instruction & practical laboratory experience to prepare students for employment in the health care field. The program prepares students for employment in hospitals, long-term care facilities, & home health agencies where venipuncture is needed. Classroom instruction includes basic venipuncture skills, basic anatomy & physiology, & infection control. Students also participate in clinical activities in a hospital under the direct supervision of an instructor. Phlebotomy's Program Objectives

The Phlebotomy program at Fletcher Technical Community College prepares individuals for:

  1. Displaying knowledge of infection control and safety
  2. Exhibiting an understanding of quality assurance and the importance of specimen collection in the overall patient care system
  3. Utilizing knowledge of collection equipment, various types of additives used, special precautions necessary, and substances that can interfere in clinical analysis of blood constituents
  4. Performing proper techniques to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on adults, children and infants
  5. Displaying a knowledge of specimen transport and processing
