Practical Nursing


This program consists of both classroom instruction & supervised clinical activities in accredited hospitals, nursing homes, and other health care agencies. This competency-based course has been designed to implement the integrated method of teaching the competencies developed by the Louisiana Community & Technical College System, Board of Supervisors & approved by the Louisiana State Board of Practical Nurse Examiners. Classroom instruction includes the integration of the following material: anatomy & physiology, microbiology, nutrition & diet therapy, documentation, communication, psychology, pharmacology, mental health, care of the adult & elderly, & maternal & child health. The program is approved by the Louisiana State Board of Practical Nurse Examiners & the Louisiana Community & Technical College System, Board of Supervisors. Upon graduation, the student is eligible to take the licensure examination administered by the National Council of State Board of Nursing. The student must pass the national exam to become a licensed practical nurse (LPN).

Practical Nursing's Program Objectives

The Practical Nursing program of Fletcher Technical Community College prepares individuals for:

  2. Promoting health and healing for clients in situations where the number of variables is limited and the outcomes tends to be predictable
  3. Functioning effectively in the practical nurse's unique role as a member within the multidisciplinary team

  5. Providing safe, effective, and ethical nursing care that meets the current standards of nursing practice for practical nurses in the state of Louisiana
  6. Participating in society as an informed citizen and pursuing an enriched personal and professional life
